I love to take any opportunity to celebrate. Recently the extended family on my mother’s side had a family reunion. It was the first time in years that so many of us had been in one place. We all gathered at the beautiful Te Mata Lodge <\/a>just north of Thames\u00a0where we enjoyed a fabulous, sunny weekend together.<\/p>\n

As everyone was arriving on the Friday evening I wanted to create something special, a welcoming party if you will. Instead of the usual supper I decided to greet\u00a0everyone with a glass of bubbly and\u00a0a make your own S’mores Bar.<\/p>\n

For those who aren’t familiar with what a\u00a0s’more\u00a0is, \u00a0it’s a traditional campfire treat popular in the United States (and now New Zealand),<\/em> consisting of a toasted marshmallow and\u00a0layer of chocolate sandwiched between two biscuits. They are very yummy!<\/span><\/p>\n

Because there was a total fire ban in the area at the time,\u00a0we couldn’t toast the marshmallows over an open fire.\u00a0So I made a toasting station using a planter,\u00a0stones\u00a0and chaffing fuel.\u00a0Chaffing\u00a0fuel burns in a controlled manner, similar to a gas barbeque, which meant it was okay to use in these conditions. I then gathered a selection of biscuits, marshmallows and chocolate. I even included some peanut butter for those who wanted to try a nutty-chocolate flavour.<\/p>\n

It was a big hit with everyone, people were still making their S’mores\u00a0in the dark. What I like most about this\u00a0idea is that\u00a0it provides snacks, an activity, a gathering point and conversation starter all in one. It definitely gave us a great start to a great weekend.<\/p>\n
