This week I have found myself planning a Mother’s Day activity for a group of pre-schoolers. The plan is for the children to make and decorate their own individual cupcake for their Mum.
While it may be considered ambitious by some, after a few trials I’m cautiously optimistic that these little bakers will succeed. And if you are brave enough to give it a go with your little ones here’s what we are going to do, along with some free printables for decorating the packaging.
I began with my favourite fudge cake recipe that I use all the time for cupcakes and broke it down to single serves.
Into a paper baking cup add the dry ingredients:
- 3 1/2 teaspoons of flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of Cocoa Powder
- 2 1/2 teaspoons of sugar
- Pinch of Baking Soda
- Pinch of Salt
Then add the wet ingredients:
- 2 1/2 teaspoons of water
- 1/4 teaspoon of White Vinegar
- 1 1/4 teaspoons of Oil
- A couple of drops of Vanilla Essence
Mix together well (the children can do the mixing, but the adult helpers will need to check it is fully mixed before it goes into the oven), put them on a tray and bake at 180 °C for 20 minutes.
Test with a toothpick – if it comes out clean then they are done.
Decorate with your favourite icing and then get the children to add some sprinkles etc. Package up the cupcake in a cupcake box (the style of box pictured here is available on Trade Me) and use some ribbon and our free printables to dress it up.
