12 Days of Christmas Ideas 2016 – Day 5
Each year as part of our ’12 Days of Christmas Ideas’ I like to include either a party plan or a Christmas tradition. I like the idea of starting my own family traditions, and since my son was born we have made more of an effort to do just that. There’s nothing wrong with having traditions. For us traditions don’t eliminate spontaneity, but are simply another way of helping us celebrate. For me, it’s kind of like having a weekly routine – less stress is involved because you know what to do, how to do it and when to do it. The tradition of The White Stocking has been around for a number of years, and stems from an adaptation by a lady named Carolyn Cox of the poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’ – which you can see here. I love this idea because it encourages us to take our eyes off ourselves and what we will get, so we can focus on others and what we can give.
All you need to make this tradition your own are the following:
- A lovely White Christmas Stocking – we are currently selling Crocheted Stockings, like the one pictured above, in our Etsy store
- A copy of ‘The White Stocking’ poem
- Some pens and paper
Then make time to sit down as a family, to do as the poem suggests. Write down what your gift will be. Maybe you want to work on a relationship, give more to a cause, be more thankful or be a nicer person. Whatever it is, the most important thing is that it comes from your heart. Then place your gift in the stocking. Many families who have this tradition will leave their gifts in the stocking for years to come so they can look back each Christmas to see how they have grown.
